  • Getting started

Hi guys, I've taken the advice i've read here on board and tomorrow I will strim my plot down and then start digging it over and picking out roots by hand. I hope to get at least one bed dug out tomorrow. I have two questions.

    1. I appear to have inherited a tree. I would say it is about five foot. It is slightly off center at the back of my 25m x 5m plot. It currently has no fruit on it and I don't know if it ever will. No one knows what it is. Any advice as to what to do with it? if it's an apple tree I would like to keep it but if it's just a tree or a pear tree or something I'd rather remove it.

    2. what kind of vegetables would you recommend sowing in June?

    Hi and welcome Bigboo
If you have a smartphone, try downloading the app Picturethis! It identifies trees for you with just the leaves. I find it remarkably accurate. It works for other plants too

June sowings - Aubergine, Leeks, Brussels, Marrows/courgettes, Cucumber, Cabbage (Autumn), Peppers (though buying plants will give better results), Cauliflower (Summer/Autum), Pumpkins, Celery, Red Cabbage, Chicory (Red and Sugarloaf), Lettuce, Runner Beans, Chilli (though buying plants will give better results), Sprouting Broccoli, Sweet Potato, Endive, Sweetcorn, French Beans, Tomatoes (though buying plants will give better results), Kale

easiest way to get an idea what the tree is, is to have a good look at the leaves or pick one off and take it with you - then compare that leaf to those of a fruit tree which you do know. All apple leaves are fairly similar but different fruits have different types of leaves.
