  • Building a greenhouse

    Hi Guys,

I want a greenhouse(or a shed type structure with lots of glass) to grow stuff if. I don't want to pay crazy prices. I already have 2 big upvc windows I can use and maybe a few glass panels. Anyone point me in the right direction?

    Thanks

Blimey....not something for words more a sketch...first your going to need a decent cemented base, then timber and once you have a (DIAGONALLY BRACED) box with window sized holes(glass not enough to brace it) and a door. You need to roof it with rafters and board felt etc....Any glass above your head perhaps should be laminated or toughened and properly framed for safety sake....you know it ain't that cheap and easy if you have no materials or tools.

With respect I spend my life building things...I think you need a person with some experiance and a toolkit....could easily go tits up.

I suggest you might go and find a greenhouse in the local ads often free or cheap to those who'll take em away.

The upvc windows will be in an aluminium surround so should be ok used as they are. A lean-to facing the sun would probably be your best bet as the roof would have a single fall.
Scrounge 3 X 2's for the roof and either rebate both edges or fasten a thin latt down the middle to act as a rebate for the scrounged glass panes or you could just use corrugated plastic for the roof.

I built this hut/greenhouse in the first allotment I had with a couple of upvc panes!

How do you secure the windows in?

Normally the windows will have been taken out leaving some fixing 'spurs' on the edge.
If not the weight of the units goes a long way to keeping them in position but can easily be held in position with overlapping lats scrrewed to the woodwork all round.

You have to loose sight of the shore sometimes to cross new oceans

I would be a perfectionist, but I dont have the time

Still on the same site............just moved along a bit and am at sixes and sevens ( Plot number 6 & 7).

And yes, thats my old shed complete with used white rubber converor belting instead of roofing felt!
Strange how all my creations are made from freebies.
Still standing and looking quite reasonable methinks though!

Welcome to the vine haza1981. You must have half of 'Jimmy with the beard's' old plot! I used to get on well with auld Jimmy and he will be sorely missed. (Moved on to pastures new methinks.)
He used to grow some good stuff in that plot so the soil should be good!

I decided to build a shed cum greenhouse using fence panels, corrugated sheets and rolled plastic...cost was just under £120 and it's great...3m wide and 6m in length. Since the inside pick was taken I've sorted out the inside and now have 4 rows of 6 growbags in frames made from a lattice fence panel chopped into lengths and adjusted slightly each square so the grown bag fitssnuggly and can'tfall over. I have cables to the cross beams and hope to fasten the toms to these...the same for the cucs and the melon.
Yesterdy we set up the first 220litre barrel to start collecting water off the roof...went over to the plot today and it was overflowing, good bank holiday weather.....need to source a lot more barrels me thinks!

It gets the afternoon sun so will still have its uses, granted it would have been better at the bottom but the back wall was a bonus. Almost finished now, pics to follow.
