    Chris11 Challenge - June Update

Another eventful month and the peppers seem to be happy in the polytunnel. More than can be said for the tomatoes which are suffering from heat and/or sun stroke.

The current status of the peppers can be summarised in Picture 1 and 2 below.

All but one of the plants have flowers and a further 3 plants have still to develop pods/fruit.

To help with the identification, Pictures 3 and 4 show "known" plants, flowers and some have pods/fruit.

During the last 2 weeks, two of the pepper plants have produced large purple fruits - Plant 12A (Picture 2 - Chris 11 Challenge) and Mixed Pepper - Picture 4.

We believe 12A will ripen to a Deep Red Pepper. Was wondering if the mixed pepper will do the same.

Plant 6A has been a bit of a maverick since germination. 1st it was the only seedling with a variegated leaf. Now it is the only Bell Pepper type with a touch of purple on the flower bud - so thinking is if there is Enjoya seed - a "Yellow and Orange" stripped Pepper grown under licence in Holland" - it will be this one. Perhaps just another red herring.

The other bell peppers - if all from the seed list - I think are California Wonder. They exhibit similar flowers and leaf but are ever so slightly different to the plants I've grown from Kings seed.

My 1st guess at Cayenne style peppers failed miserably. Whilst creating the "Seed list Spreadsheet", I'd hidden 2 or the cayenne style peppers. I now know that there is no Joes Long in the mix - See Chris11 Challenge June 1.1 Guess Blog so back to the list on this one (if they are indeed on the list)

As many of you will know I got bags for flower isolation. I've been told they are slightly small, but with a few leaf removals, I've been able to isolate some of the larger flowers and groups of smaller ones. I've had some success. Other flowers have just dropped off, so still working on the correct technique for the flower / plant type.

My over-wintered Scots Bonnet and Chocolate Habanero are still fighting back. Not only will they not set flowers, but it is looking more as if they will have to go into isolation if I have any chance of saving seed.
The other over-winter plants have also been a bit of a disappointment, It may be better to grow plants each year.

Finally must say that plant 7B wins the nicest flower. The leaves also seem to be turning darker, so looking forward to pods developing.

Until next month - Keep growing.

Edit 2/7/18 - Enjoya is not an F1 as earlier indicated.

Agreed, 6A is probably an Enjoya. Will be interesting to see how this one goes.

Enjoya is not an F1. As per comments on the thread, the biology/genetics of this one is complicated, and best explained here:
      https://the-biologist-is-in.blogspot...ya-pepper.html

Darren grew seven plants and said one of them had the same flowers with distinctive purple highlights. Perhaps your 7A might also be one of these, although it's too early to say until we see the pods.

Edit: should have been referring to 7B, not 7A.

Thanks for the feedback. 7A is not an Enjoya. Purple pointed pod emerged today. How big it gets is another question, but by looks of plant, I'm expecting lots of smallish peppers. It also had the odd variegated leaf.

      Will correct F1 error.

6A had a variegated leaf similar to the occasional leaf on many "sweet peppers" Light Green Tiger stripes on dark green background.

Hmm...that's interesting. Do you think 7B might be the same as 12A?
