  • Wrong bags of horse manure!! Help!

My wonderful chap thought he was being very helpful when he forked over several sacks of horse manure over my vegetable beds.

Trouble is he used the sacks from the pile which are only nearly 8 months old.

Will I be ok to still plant stuff in these beds now?
It looks so fresh, mainly because it's wood shaving based so you can clearly see all the wood still.

He was so pleased with all his hard work too!

It's not the wood that matters, it's whether the poo has rotted. I should have thought that after 8 months it would be OK to use.

Don't plant root veg in those beds though.

What will be growing in the beds? I've planted stuff in fresher manure than that (potatoes and onions I think, from memory!). Sure you'll be ok.

        Thanks Rustylady and Sluglobber.

I was planning on planting all sorts, Beans, Peas, Sweetcorn, Globe Artichokes, Cucumbers, Salad stuff.....a right old mix.

Wasn't sure if I could put Brassicas in now it's been manured?

Brassicas are fine with manure, but do need firm soil so if you are planting them you need to tread the soil first.

And remember Globe Artichokes are a permanent crop, so you might want to fine somewhere else for them.

Thanks again Rustylady - Good point about the Globes!

Out in the cold - I'd forgotten, I've also got some Squashes to go in there too!
