  • Who knows their onions 2018?

We have a great onion thread if you want a long read....

But I thought some of you would like to start a new Q&A thread and to show us this years progress

I will be buying 150 onion sets, which will be Sturon. I will grow 100 of them at home and 50 at my friend's - the 100 will be small to medium sized, ideal for me, the 50 will grow huge, for my friend. The difference is simply the amount of sunshine and well rotted horse manure available.

Sturon are my favourite onion and I won't be persuaded to try anything else now. They are not too strong, sweet tasting, ultra reliable and store for ages. What more could you possibly want?

I grew F1 Red Pearl from seed last year, the were from Samuel Dobie and as there was more than I needed I still have some in their foil packet for next season, hopefully they will grow as they were my most successful red skinned I've grown, very tasty. They will go into the propagator on Boxing Day, getting excited already, new growing season round the corner.

For some reason, I always do better with overwintered japanese onion sets than spring planted sets. Even the 'Reds' grow well for me, although I do like the flavour of the red spring sown torpedo onions.

When previously grow from sets i had sturon, this year am having a change,i got 1kbag of rumba,in a few weeks they will go into seed trays to root, come the better weather when the lottie ground is workable, and them hardened off, will plant them out,2 rows aprox 8in apart, leave a good foot and repeat, that way,i know where they are, they will have a good root system, and can get to weed and hoe the area.

Snadger, do the Japanese onion sets withstand the frost, and if so does this weather that we are having just now where we had hard frost then the temp. up to 10c cause them to bolt?
it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

Strangely I haven't any photos of my onions - perhaps they are just not that exciting!

This one was taken this morning of some of the ones grown at home:

For harvest in 2018 I'm doing:

                        Autumn Champion - white onion
                        Electric - red onion
                        Senshyu Yellow - Japanese onion

Never had a problem with japs in the past. Normally my spring planted red onion sets bolt though, so i have given up on these, preferring to grow the red torpedo onions from seed.

I started a few Sturon in August, just to see how they get on as overwintering onions. So far so good...

I'll sow some more after Christmas in the greenhouse, then more again in March (which is when I normally sow).

I planted japanese overwinter sets and jap' shillott sets at end of Oct/first week Nov,

The Onions seem to be doing Ok ( 1st Pic) but the shallots (2Nd & 3Rd pic ) I'm not sure about.....its the first time I've grown these in the garden and indeed in containers.....Advice and opinions please..
I have grown spring planted sets before and had acceptable results.

N.B for anyone interested.......I will ONLY POST on here regarding SETS.
Anything to do with my SEEDED onions will be on the old, long thread.....ONIONS FROM SEED.........I sincerely hope this will stop any CONFUSION ....
