    What squash for outside of greenhouse

    I have a nice little border next to my greenhouse.
    I grew french beans up a net last year.
    I am going to try outdoor cucumbers this year on half.
    I thought perhaps some form of squash on the other half.
    Something prolific and not to big fruited.
    I assume I would have to tie them on.
    I also looked at climbing courgettes ????

    Any ideas/suggestions.
    Area is Lancs.

    I grew spaghetti squash up a trellis last year. I tied the vines to it but didn't need to support the individual fruit. That might apply to most smallish squashes as they have such chunky stalks.

      How about 8 ball courgettes ? they will probably be easily trained although I have never tried it ? The small round courgettes are great tasting and don't take up much room.

        Bon-bon will climb and fruit on trellis, but the fruits aren't small and the plants are pretty agressive, even for squash.... Winter Festival fits the bill for fruit size but Idon't know about climbing as all mine were in the flat last year. Taste nice though and you'll get 8-10 squashes about the size of a big grapefruit per plant... sets early too...

          Might get both !

          Saw a pumpkin munchkin which look OK any experience any one ?

              That's a good idea, thanks I hadn't thought of that. I'm trying Tondo di Nizza round green courgettes and crystal lemon round yellow cukes this year. Trellis or netting it is then.

              Growing a winter squash, yellow hubbard, from Kings but don't know how big they get or whether they can be trained up or not. Anyone know this variety? My Dad grew a green version in the 70s and they were size of small melon but then he had plenty of space to grow along the ground.

                Hi Jimmy.. I grew "Munchkin" squash 2008 season, there nice flattish yellow squash about the size of a tennis ball, there tasty as well. I agree with the "Eight ball Courgette", (Can't train it up trellis its a bush plant), but I'm growing it again this year, I have some seed spare if you'd like to try them? I have some "Marketmore" outdoor cucumber seed left if you'd like some as well? PM me if your interested. xx

                    Bit late to this I know, but I grew Chestnut Squash last year and that had plenty of small, orange attractive looking fruits on it.

                      Tromboncino Courgette is really worth growing with the added advantage that if you let the later ones grow really large and ripen they store like squash.

                      Well that is what they say - I had 2 plants last year and they were so tasty I was still picking really tiny courgettes from them in early November. I grew up a south facing wall - very worthwhile plant, and so was the really tasty onion squash Uchi Kuri.
