  • What are the best things for me to grow?

Hi everyone, been a while since I've posted but I'm back for a while post-graduation and Preston house-hunting!
The house I will be renting next year (in Preston) has a small back yard with no grass and a teeny tiny raised bed, as far as I can tell it gets sun most of the day (I've only seen it at lunch time and in the evening), can anyone tell me what I could successfully grow in containers that wouldn't take up too much space.
If anyone has any other advice about growing stuff in containers I would really appreciate it

    Thanks in advance
    Sam xxxxxxxx

    Hi Samwise

    Welcome back to the crazyvine
you will get loads of answers for that one but i will start

Carrots (small rooted ones are best) Chanternay and Permex
Spring onions ( although i put a gutter on the fence and grew those in that)
Beetroot ( Small Globe ones are best)
    Radishes (Most types)
    Tomatoes (In growbags)
    Potatoes (In Buckets)
    Strawberries
    Lettuce (In growbags)

Keep well away from Brassicas (Way toooo big)
    Cheers .... John

With very limited space herbs can be really worthwhile.

Fresh coriander, thyme, chives & oregano can lift even supermarket veg

In addition to John's list you could try squashes and courgettes, potatoes, french beans, pak choi and many herbs. I have also grown broccoli this summer, am awaiting the first sprouts from my purple sprouting and have two fishboxes full of small cabbages. All my veggies and my strawberries are grown in containers as I have no depth of soil, living on an old slate quarry. You may not get a huge harvest of some things, but even so it is immensely rewarding. I grow basil indoors on the sunny windowsill and am lucky enough to have a conservatory so can grow peppers, aubergines and tomatoes indoors as well.
Don't be afraid to try whatever gives you pleasure to eat. Good luck with it.

Thanks for your suggestions, I've got a few varieties of tomatoes to try and I have a strawberry plant I hope to take with me, carrots, potatoes and herbs I will definitely try. I would also like to grow cucs again as I was quite successful with those this year, will that be possible?

follow two-sheds advice and the container thread. I've proved to myself this year that just about everything can be grown in pots. My biggest success has been the pencil leeks. You can thin them out to use like spring onions and let the others get big enough for soups and stews. If you feed them they just keep growing and have a long cropping season.
