  • What AREN'T you going to grow next year

Inspired by a thread on another forum; what are you going to NOT grow in the coming 12 months.

For me, it's mainly tomatoes outdoors. And possibly celery outdoors. Both will be in the greenhouse.

What has got your goat over the years, and this year was the last chance; or what did you experiment with that was absolute rubbish?

Its got to be swede. I got some plug plants, but it is just in the ground too long and the leaves seem to attract too many pests. Although its not the point, its too cheap in the shops to not worry about growing it. Celeriac also hasnt done well for me. I prefer to grow things that arent available in the shops or that i can improve the quality on, ie that do not travel well. I have limited space so have to make that decision.

Broad beans for me........they are just TOO productive! Theres only me in the family who appreciates there taste and I can't possibly get through the amount I've grown.
Just a few of my crimson flowered next year............as much for decoration as anything else!

Okra's had it's last change as have round courgettes and patty pans. I'll stick to normal courgettes in future.

Not sure about normal sized onions from seed either. I'll keep doing the mammoth varieties but the standard size onions seem to do much better from sets.

I don't grow celery anyway (too stringy); nor outdoor tomatoes (waste of time with blight).

I won't try growing radish again in the summer either (it just doesn't work for me)
I've never managed to grow swedes ... but I still don't feel like giving them up yet
Scorzonera is now off my list ... but it's self-seeded everywhere

Cauliflowers - even when they grow (albeit rather small), I don't seem to have the knack of getting to eat them before they blow.

Tomatoes of any description for me. I'm just rubbish at them.

Oh, and probably cabbages - just can't be faffed.

I've been thinking of giving up with parsnips. Only ended up with one this year so I grew lettuce in the rest of the container, shame because its the size of half a bath so a real waste of growing space unless I grow something deep rooted.

Garlic - third year of tiny bulbs and single cloves, and carrots - hardly any germinate and they take forever to grow. I did say leeks this year but OH begged and they have done far better. Hey ho!

My brasiccas were a disaster - Cabbage white and caterpillars everywhere so I gave up on them this year.

I wont be growing parsnips next year. They are already huge and noone in my family likes them.

A few things didnt take - My melons, beefsteak tomatoes, tomatillos and my sweet dumpling squash so I'll save my money next year.

I was rubbish with Parsnips (might try again not sure) but I wont bother with pumpkin again. The plant grew huge, lots of pumpkins, but it was taking over and as the slugs were having a party and we dont each much pumpkin, at its cheap anyway, I could not see the point.

i think i'll grow everything i can next year, but will cut down on the varieties of everything i grow
this year i experimented with several varieties of everything, trying to find out which were tastiest and to see if it helps stagger the growing / harvesting so that i could pick fresh more often and not have to store it - success with some, failure with others, so will cut back on some varieties
this year i didn't bother with swede - i don't eat it - chucked away several swedes last year - but i now have a girlfriend and she loves it, so will grow some next year - and can always use it in pickles and chutneys etc
