  • Tumbling Toms in hanging baskets

    Hi,
How many Tumbling Tom plants should be put in a hanging basket? I only put one in each of mine. They did well but I wonder if I put in more plants would they do ok? Also the baskets were a bit lop sided as the plant hung down only one side.

I'd leave it at a maximum of 2 as they do spread quite a bit, if you grow the yellow ones that should also give you space for something with a deep-blue/purple flower to pop in there too (trailing lobelia being probably the most obvious, but boring suggestion) the fruits contrast beautifully with the flowers though and you have a lovely display AND homegrown toms.
Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

In the past I have put three in a basket but it is to many as the baskets get to overcrowded. This year I only did two per basket but the plants still got overgrown. Next year I am going to change the tomato variety to garden pearl to get a larger tomato and less of a tangle with the plant. Will do three baskets with one, two and three plants in each and see which does better.

Thanks for the advice. I like the idea of having flowers in the basket too. I have three baskets so I will experiment a bit next year. It's my first year for outdoor tomatoes and to my surprise I had red tomatoes in my hanging baskets several weeks before any ripened in the greenhouse.

I use a mix of six scoops of compost three scoops of sand/grit and two scoops of perlite, the quantity is unimportant as long as the ratio is the same, if for seeds I use this mix, if I am potting on I add some blood, fish and bone, along with a small quantity of chicken manure pellets
