  • Is it too late to Sow Chard for summer crop?

Does any one know if I've left it too late in spring to sow chard, and does it get sown direst or is it better started off in propogators?

My packet of Swiss Chard says: "sow March to August" so you should be OK. I haven't planted mine yet so I hope so.

Well I haven't sown mine yet so it better hadn't be too late! Recommended time for sowing is mid March through to mid May sown direct into the ground 4 inches apart and then thinned to 1 foot apart.

Thanks guys. They were seeds from Alan Romans and they don't print the directions on the packets and on the web site it just said sowe in spring... Am not grumbling though as they were extremely cheap at 50p for 300 seeds of Ruby Chard

I found a packet at the end of last summer and sowed them in the polytunnel, I think in September. I had chard all winter, and have only just dug them up to make way for everything else. They seem quite hardy.

Mine are still going strong as well. I sowed them in a pot & then pricked them out into the six packs that you get bedding in.

I grew mine in 6 packs and put them out few days ago as they were outgrowing their first home - seem to be doing OK. Definitely not too late to sow. Will be putting more in later on to have constant supply.

I have sown 'Bright Lights' two to a small pot. They are getting a little leggy and I'm not quite sure what to do with them now!!!

My raised beds haven't happened yet so is it okay to put into gro bags now or should I put them in bigger individual pots first?????

I'd just put them into individual pots for now Voodoo, they should be fine. I grew 'Bright Lights' last year & the ones I planted in the veg. patch got eaten almost as soon as I put them in by slugs or snails so I put some others in large pots & just used the small leaves as 'cut & come again' crops & they are still growing now. This year I have some 'Rainbow' hardening off in the plastic greenhouse at the moment.
