  • Tomatoes: bush or tall efforts?

As part of a seed promo we got a free packet of 12 different mixed tom seeds, which we have planted.

The question is, how do we know if it is a bush tomato or the other kind?

Reading the forum today has caused us to ask this question, given that it seems one type needs the bottom leaves (side shoots) taken off and the other left on...
Quanti canicula ille in fenestra ?

    Do you know the varieties?
You can grow vines like bushes, I do. It's only here in the UK that nip out side shoots.

      Thanks Zazen.

Not really sure of the variety as we had loads of tom seeds and can't remember which packets were which (got loads free with other stuff earlier in the year, but I do remember it being a mixed pack we sowed)

Sorry for going off topic but I read you saying that before zazen. Does it not get very messy? Do you find the yield is greater or less? Does it ripen later because there's so much foliage and fruit? Thanks and sorry out in the cold

The reason I found this out is because I put some plants into a garden, outside, in Coventry a couple of years back. And couldn't get back in until September. And the plants had sprawled everywhere but I was taking trugs and trugs of toms home. When I finally cleared the plot I realised that there were only 4 actual plants there. So I now make a frame around the toms and let them do their thing and I also try to grow bush toms as much as vines. And if I do decide to nip out sideshows, it's only to make new plants.

I have had the privilege of seeing Zaz's sprawlers. I remember the ingenious sausage pot lifted onto a table, to cascade down. Looked wonderfully healthy.
