  • Tomato Plants flowering

Hi. My young tomato plants are staring to flower. Is this good or bad? They are aroung 8-10 inches long. Sherley and gardeners delight. Many thanks

At a guess I would say bad, given Shirley grows to a height of 79” & spread of 20”,what size pot is it in ?

Mine too, I'm happy about it they are maskotka. I read that spraying the flowers with a fine mist helps the first fruit set. So I've been doing that. Should have first setting within a week I'd guess, hopefully.

I had mine flower early last year - I sprayed with mist as they were indoors and gave them a little 'shake' or wiggle every day to help fruit set

There are now in 6" pots. They were in 3" pots up until two days ago. If I pinched the forming flowers off would it save the plant and would it grow to it's full size?

Your plant doesn't really need "saving". Tomatoes form flower trusses at intervals all the way up the main stem.

I think yours have formed flowers early because they were in small pots for too long. You can cut this first truss off if you wish, but do keep an eye on the plants as they grow to make sure they don't get potbound again.

They will need putting into their final large pots when the roots have filled the present ones, and you may need to give them some form of support before then.

I actually bought them as plug plants from a garden centre in mid march

They might just be early sown and be ok in flower. I sowed a few early and raised them under lights for a while so I'm happy with them flowering early as that was the point, an early crop.

So maybe I should just allow them to grow on and produce early toms?
