    tips to improve my veg patch

    Hi guys

    i was wondering what can i do to my veg patch over the winter to improve the soil for next spring at the moment the soil in there is last years compost.

    i was thinking horse manure however i want to plant corrots in the patch and i heard they dont like horse manure.

    I plan on growing , beatroot, spring onions, corrots.

    If it was me I'd add some fish blood and bone prior to sowing, carrots in particular do not like fresh manure as it makes them fork - you could then add some manure /organic material at the end of next season ready for alternative crops the year after. Hope this helps

      so right now then i do nothing to it.
      could i mix in some sand to help with drainage

        Some coarse sand or grit would help with drainage. I'd be tempted to put something like bone meal in it now as it is a slow release fertilizer.

          Rightly or wrongly, I have recently filled up my beds with "well rotted" manure & plan to top them up in spring.

            No point feeding empty beds
            Sprinkle BFB before planting, but ensure it doesn't touch plants or it will scorch them.

            Having said that, beetroot, carrots and spring onions don't need any feeding.
            I'd just incorporate some well-rotted garden compost to improve the soil. It's not too rich in nutrients.

              if you live near the coast you could use seaweed as a soil conditioner
