is it just me thats thinks it is ok to grow strange coloured veg i have purple and green and orange coulis. purple,white,yellow carrots. red sprouts and i am always looking for new ones so why do the other allotment folk look at mine like i have gone mad with a spray can

No, I think so too! I'm growing Ezethas Krombek Blauwschok peas which have purple flowers and pods and are really very pretty indeed. Taste good too.

I am also growing odd coloured veg - have stuck to regular cauliflowers but have blue and red sweetcorn and red cabbage, purple and yellow beans and purple mangetout. More fun to grow stuff you just don't see in the shops isn't it?

I'm "growing" carrots in this season's colours: white, yellow, purple. I say growing, but actually the slugs have had em all.

Rainbow chard "Bright Lights" is doing brilliantly...yellow, red, orange and white stems.

I tried diff.coloured radish, but they were rubbish...very tough and small. Gone back to French Breakfast.

French Beans: growing purple, "black", green, pink speckled and yellow ones. Just getting flowers on now.

Broad Beans: crimson flowered, so beautiful. I'm saving the whole crop for next year's seeds. I also had one lilac-flowered one in my pack of Aquedulce, so i'm saving that for seed too.

Welcome both. I think we all like to experiment a bit - I've got 3 colours of tomatoes (actually they're all green at the moment but time will produce a bigger range of colours!) It's really nice to grow something you can't buy in the shops isn't it?

I think it's a great idea to grow unusual coloured veg- it's a great talking/tasting point.
Would love to know your views on their flavours and resistance to disease compared to the 'average' veg though?
Anything which encourages kids and non-veg eaters to sample fresh, healthy veg must be a plus!
They look great in the garden/lottie as well as on the plate too.

hell and thank you all where do i find the blue red sweet corn i find the purple and orange coulis are ok but the green ones are a pain not very bolt resistant as for carrots they are a great addition to the allotment red kholl rabi(spelt wrong) is coming on great and my strange little ppl i have got would prefer sunday lunch instead of mcdonalds so done something right

I'm trying different coloured carrots - I think I have rainbow, purple and yellow. Also growing normal orange carrots aswell.

I'm sticking with the 'normal' stuff this year to get the hang of it all, but reading some of your posts I can't wait to try other colours next year now that I know I CAN grow things! I'm noting some of the interesting vareties you are all trying to give a go myself.

Our 'little people' love their veg too. I think it comes from being weaned onto pureed sunday roast rather than commercial baby foods.

all i need to do now is to get the little ppl to learn to weed and dig then i would be happy they could do the work i could watch them but they do love going down the allotment i keep losing them in the pea run i might get to pick some one day

aahh,my little girl loves her veggies 2. she was very sickly til i took her off the baby jars,started buying fresh food and made my own! Now we are growing our own and she loves it even more! Shes 2yrs old and I dont know any other kid who eats as well as she does. you know your doing something right when your kids are fighting you for your peas lol,cos mines just the same!

Anyway back on the subject,I have purple sprouting broccolli (not that unusual I know,but most of my friends have never heard of it lol) and next year i have about 8 tomato varieties to try including a yellow one! Definately want to try more though!

I've white icicle radish, which are - wait for it - white! Hot as you like, mind. Also growing mixed colour carrot.

update Sat 15/11/2008......there's gold in them thar...compost bins!......

I forgot to mention I am also growing blue patty pan squash. Planting them out among the blue sweetcorn today.

Picked the first purple mangetout yesterday - purple outside pods, green inside and green peas. Looked yummy but younger son snaffled it!

We are growing purple podded peas which tasted great last year but as we only have a few seeds, most will be saved for next season.

Hmm - just had a skeg at the website PW. Are the peas themselves the usual colour?
I've grown purple french beans in the past and was sad to see the colour all soak out into the cooking water!
