I'm an expert in absolutely nothing but they seem very pricey compared to other growers, even with free postage.

I'm also not keen on this:

"These seed potatoes have been chemically treated with Fungazil 100 SL and buyers are advised to wash hands after handling or planting. Keep away from children, domestic pets and wildlife."

Is that standard practice?

Yep Minty, you're very right! That does seem very expensive indeed!

Take a look at the following links, I've only looked at the charlottes, but I'm sure they will all be cheaper!

3kg of Charlottes from Browns for £6.95
D.T. Brown and Co. Early Maincrop

2.5kg Charlottes from Alan Romans £2.80
Alan Romans - Charlotte

20 tubers of Charlottes from Thompson and Morgan £3.69
Illustrated Index of : Second Early

Dear dear! You have to take into account that spuds are heavy and the postage is not inconsiderable - but nowhere near this!

I'm having the same dilema with acquiring seed potatoes cheaply that the P&P makes it impossible. I like Alan Roman's price best if only you could buy at their price & choice from your local GC or nursery. Been meaning to enquire around all the local nurseries. I thought about finding someone to share the order to halve the P&P cost but I think won't bother.

Shoot me for saying this but I think I might go for supermarket spuds and I ain't too worried coz they'll be pot grown. Any loss will be pretty negligible.

I grow potatoes from the supermaket one year, blue congo. They were in the worst possible soil, totally dry so I only got a small harvest. That was the only problem. I don't think it's a problem to grow potatoes from the supermarket shelfs if you find a variety you like. I don't see a point in just growing any old bag of potatoes, but that's because I want to know what I'm growing so I can grow it again next year if it's good

I'm confused! I ordered the free Vales Emerald tubers too and have just recieved a packet of Mixed Ranunculus It's not as if I really *mind*, afterall they were free, but just wondered if they were some sort of extra or whether someone who ordered Ranunculus is now staring bemusedly at a bag of spuds...

Anyone else got their package yet?

Good stuff Seasprout. Think postage was only 90p though. Which i thought not too bad considering the free Rununculus aswell. Minty x

Not that i would condone this kind of behaviour BUT i ordered some for most of my family ;-) had them sent to their address and paid the postage with my bank card. Seemed to work. Although Dave the Goldfish is a little concerned about overwatering..... Minty x

I think my 'free' spuds might be on their way, noticed a 0.95p DT Brown debit on my credit card - the offer is still on DT Browns site....Vales Emerald sound interesting, might try them in containers.

I purchased seed potatoes from GC on monday at £5 for 2.5 kg and I thought that was expensive. I wanted sarpo mira (due to bad attact of blight this year) and there arn't many places you can get them.

Thanks Paul, I like a tasty salad spud (esp. for 95p!). I was wondering about looking for Roseval which is supposed to be very tasty too. No doubt we'll buy too many spuds again!
