  • Purple Sprouting Broccoli and 60-day rabe

I planted some broccoli in may and according to the seed packet this should be ready for harvest in January. The plants have grown big already and have there is a smallish purple head on one of them. However, two yellow flowers have opened, does this mean they have bolted? Will the purple heads continue to grow?

I also planted some 60 day rabe broccoli and this seams to have bolted before the heads could develop as yellow flowers have opened on the plants? Has anyone else had this problem?

Take the head off and use it, the plant will then send out side shoots which you can then harvest. It is one of the problems of sowing PSB to early, I did the same last year. I still managed a crop after Xmas.
The 60 day Raab seems to de a devil to grow I sowed some and it has got to 3" high and is flowering, I have pinched all the heads out and got half a meal from them. I am now hoping they will grow a bit bigger before they start flowering again.

      yes, yellow flowers indicates bolting.
Ideally they should be sown in May, planted out in July, and harvested in Jan/Feb/Mar

Mine has done the same thing....sowed according to packet instructions, but looks like I could have left it a lot longer. Know for next year!
