Default overwintering onions

Is it too early to put in overwintering onion sets yet?
I plan to grow "red cross" this year, has anyone had any success/ disapointment with these?
I'm also growing "shimmonita" from seed and they are looking lovely, might make up a little for my maggotty leeks!! (destroyed)

For some reason I never have any joy with either Spring or Autumn planted red onion sets! They always seem to go to seed!
This year I sowed red Ham onions from seed in the spring and for the first time I've had a wonderful crop of red onions with no 'seeders'!

Good luck with yours though and don't be put off by previous efforts!
