    are my courgettes getting too much sun?

    hi, all

    I am growing courgettes in pots. most of them now have three to four large leaves with new ones coming up. thanks to all your advice they look generally quite well.

    Because of the recent cold spell I brought them back in and put them by a sunny window.

    Now, though the newer leaves look fine, the larger and more mature leaves are drying out at the edges. and some have a dry spot or two.

    Is this because they were attacked by a sudden cold night or two?
    are they getting too much sun?

    I haven't put gravel or any thing at the bottom of the pots, do they need draining?

    I suspect it is either the dry air in the house or they may have been caught by the cold snap. If you still have them indoors remove them from the windowsill at nigh as it can still dip to near frost between the windows and the curtains.

      WAY too early for courgettes! We're not sowing them for another coupla weeks, cos they can't go outside until May.

        Thanks chaps,

        I'd heard it was early but it was getting so warm. and its my first time so i got excited.

        do they need lots of light?
        and will they be too warm in a hallway with a heating vent?

          Yes they will. They need loads of light and water. If the weather is OK I would put them out side during the day and bring them in to the cooles place in the house at night.

            When they started off well I felt I was natural. but as soon as they look a little mortal I haven't got a clue and understand very little.

              Oh, you're ok! We all get premature sometimes. I shoved some turnip seeds in the ground today, cos it was sunny and I needed to sow something. (I don't really like turnips, so I don't care if they die)
              The seed packets and even the books can be misleading about sowing times. Lots say March when it should really say April, and so on.
              Just do some more in a few weeks time.

                Hello Spliblob, yes you are a bit early with your courgettes, but you can still be successful with them if you want to nurse your babies. You've had some good advice above, and you should go with it. Once you start putting plants like courgettes and squash outdoors you will get some weather damage to the leaves. It doesn't matter as long as you know that's what it is. You've got plenty of time to sow some more, so why not go for belt and braces, and plant some more in April to make sure. There will only be a few weeks of difference in your first courgettes. Make a note of your sowing dates and the results, then you will know what is best for you for next year. Good luck.
