  • Money Savings Spreadsheet

    Hi all,

Not sure if this is of interest to anyone, but I got fed up of sitting around and wishing I was on the plot over Christmas, so decided to make a spreadsheet to work out how much money I save GYOing next year.

My girlfriend thinks I'm nuts, but I guess it is the geek in me!

If anyone wants to try it, you can get it here: Real Men Sow / a cheery allotment blog Blog Archive The Real Men Sow Veg Savings Spreadsheet 2011

Its nothing complicated, but keeps everything neat and tidy, which is something I'm not great at!

    Jono.

      Very nice!

However I am the spreadsheet queen.

I'd not have a separate sheet for spends - I'd ditch the top 3 lines, having one row with all your titles on it. I'd add a column for seed spend and totalise it in the top row. I'd have a column for misc spend and totalise it on the top row.

Then, instead of using 'sum' I'd use 'subtotal' and use number 9 to sum the totals. This way, you can select 'carrots' and filter on carrots to find out your total spend versus saving just on one crop [now we are getting really geeky]

Also, in another cell on the top column you can do a 'all over total' with the spends minus the savings which will show your total there, rather than having to keep inserting rows and having your total move down the page.

If you do it like this, with all the totals in the top row and only data in the rows below, then you can pivot table out your year's figures and really look at what you have saved.

I've had a fiddle and emailed it to you.....for perusal.....

Just downloaded the spreadsheet thanks Jono, and I'll give it a go next year to see how it compares to the scribbles I do in my journal.

I plan on doing it too, but not via a spread sheet, as I'll just get bored with it (spend too much time on a computer).. I've translocated a couple A4 notepads, and A4 day-by-page diaries from work, which from the new year will be my gardening diary, then as per mrs dobbie I'm going to do a balance sheet.
