  • Kohlrabi, when to harvest?

I have some Kohlrabi growing which I have never grown before. What size does the plant have to be before I can harvest it?

If I remember right, you want to harvest before they reach tennis ball size, so you should be able to enjoy them for a while. Mine haven't started to swell yet

Depends on the variety but usually between golf and tennis ball size as previously stated - unless it's the variety Superschmelz, which can grow a lot bigger.

I leave mine til about coming up to tennis ball size. If you sow late they stand very well into the winter.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

I've just sown some more too. I'm sure it said on the packet that June was a sowing month.

I know you can eat it raw, grated or finely sliced in a salad, but that seems like a shame when they are so beautiful to look at. You can also boil them.

Indigox is right - that's what all books suggest. I never had the foggiest what a kohl rabi was 'til my hubbs bought one. His dear ol' mum used to cook with it in stir-fries. (She was Vietnamese.) It's sweet and crunchy and the taste reminds me of broccoli stalks!
