I take it these are sets (rather than seeds), if they were mine they would go straight into the ground.

Pointy end up

, just deep enough so that there is a bit above ground (watch out for birds tugging them up), 4" - 6" between sets and roughly 9" between rows is typical

In a barrel id plant them 6" between plants all way round

If you look at the square foot gardening thread you should be able to get 16 sets in a 1ft sq cell, one every 4 inches in each direction.
