  • If you only had 30 minutes to spend on the plot, what would you do?

    Hello everyone!

We're currently working on the April issue, so for this question I'm going to need you to put your forward thinking caps on and focus on this time of year when the season is really starting to get going.

If you could only go down to the allotment/edible garden for a 30 minute session, what would you do? Practical, quick jobs would be appreciated

I look forward to reading your answers!

    Thanks

    Emily

Weed, Seed and Feed in that order.

Hoe over paths and remove any stray weeds from beds as quickly as pos.
Sow seeds without getting toocarried away (easier said than done)
Then if I have any time left, cover and mulch any areas which may be empty/ free

It would depend on what the weather is like. With all of the rain we've had, I can't remember the last time I had to water anything but if it was dry then it can take me that long to water so that is all that I would have time to do.

Edit: weeding too (i don't think any weeds have stopped growing yet with this mild winter)

Check for any damage from weather and wildlife ( and hopefully not vandals!)
Pick what I need to take home.
          sow/plant out
weed for the rest of the time whilst talking to myself about what I need to do/take with me next time I'll be there
..and a final quick check of any fleeces/netting before I leave.

Ha!...I spent years of 'snatched 30 minutes' down at the plot

That is a really difficult question to answer Emily, given you only have 30 mins it would depend what needs doing.

Well, I'd have to go along with what most have said. It would have to be weeding. As i look out of my window at my garden, i can see one or two weeds starting to pop up now.

I would have a cup of tea handy as well mind.

30 minutes is just long enough for me to wander around the garden, coffee mug in hand, observing what has grown or needs attention and deciding what to do next.

Check for slug and snail signs - slime trails etc.

                      Check for caterpillar eggs.

Sigh over ungerminated seeds and sing to those that are putting in some effort.

Seriously, though, I've done almost all my gardening in short bursts, it's all I have available.

I had 30 minutes today so this is what I did.
Picked up fallen leaves. Filled the bird feeders and waterers. Checked nothing has fallen in the pond. Tie anything back that has fallen forward. (Clematis 'disturbed' by the dog) Pulled up weeds near me for the chickens to eat. Check chickens, put fresh paper in their house and collected eggs. Filled up chicken feeder and waterer. Pulled up some kale for chickens. Looked about at stuff that was emerging. Smiled
You may say I'm a dreamer... But I'm not the only one...

I'm an official nutter - an official 'cropper' of a nutter! I am sooooo pleased to be a cropper! Hurrah!
