  • How's everybody's sweetcorn doing?

Got 4 in the poly which are up to the roof and have 2 fattening cobs on each plant and the leaves are covered in pollen, but the outdoor ones are a completely different kettle of worms. The tallest is about a foot high and whilst they look sturdy little plants, I'm sure they were bigger than that at this time last year. just wondering if mine are about par for the course.

    Damned weather!
    Are y'oroight booy?

Everything is really slow this year, I'm beginning to think that Harvest Festival on my plot is going to be a bit bleak.

Polytunnel ones fine (but no cobs yet), outdoors still small. But then so are the endless fields the local farmers have sown - mine are no worse than theirs, which makes me feel much better .

Oh dear, the same story here - the school ones are about a foot high and not looking very happy - I have sown some more since these were sown in April and they are a bit greener but not very tall - these will go out on my allotment when it stops raining!
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Mine are about 18 inches high outside, but have been blown over numerous times. They're in a really rich bed too, mine are just slightly ahead of the others on the site (I planted mine early!)

Direct sown one by my neighbour have pretty much caught up with mine, sown start of june, but they all seem to have stopped growing.

I have a load of plants too, so I really do hope they'll fruit - pretty much a third of my plot is corn!

So fed up with this weather ... mine are about 15-18 inches tall, but they need the sun.

they look very sorry for themselves - bashed by the wind despite our attempts at windbreaks and only knee high.....in fact everything looks very sorry for itselves.......did we really expect any better weather though with the jubilee and olympics to wash out!!?

I'm thinking of giving in and digging mine up. Some were pretty small when I planted them out, and don't seem to have grown at all. One was attacked by maggots, and died. A couple that were bigger when planting out have thickened up a bit, but have not gained much height at all.

Oh, and they're all leaning slightly southwards due to (I'm assuming) a combination of straining for the sun, and being battered by the wind that our walled garden seems to funnel round to the back of them.

30 sown, 5 germinated and planted out.
Mole tunnelled beneath one and the other four are sulking. But again so are the rows in the fields hereabouts.

So glad you asked this question Vince as I'm happy to see that mine aren't the only ones to suffer from lack of the big yellow thing in the sky.

I grew 3 in the greenhouse which came on so quickly but since planting them in the raised bed they hardly seem to have done anything.

I think we will get the 2nd half of our summer when the kids go back to school in September, it's always the way!
