  • Homemade vertical planter

I remember reading a post on here (within the last week, I think) about making a homemade vertical planter by putting a post/stake in the ground and then 'threading' pots over the stake.

I think it's a brilliant idea and quite fancy a vertical herb planter. I have a couple of tree stakes spare in the shed and loads of Morrisons buckets I can cut a hole in the bottom of to go over the stake. I just can't think of the best way to fasten the buckets or pots to the stake....

Can the original poster or anybody else suggest how best to fix the pots or buckets to the stake?

If you cut a hole in the bottom of the bucket the same size as the post you could thread them over the post and they could rest on the pot below..............well I know what I mean even if nobody else does

I had to look up rebar, as i had no idea what it is. It is steel reinforcing bar used in reinforced concrete. Being unprotected steel it will rust, possibly fairly quickly.

Erm...pots are slanted outwards so the bottom of the upper pot would be smaller than the top of the lower pot plus you'd need to leave a gap for the plants...

Sorry VC but you're confusing me . Perhaps you could draw a picture (or you might have been thinking of something like the topsy, turvy one)

We could have a go at one of those as we have a load of road spikes - you know the ones that are hammered into the ground and then tape strung on the top to restrict access etc......now there's an idea?

Use ascending sizes big at the bottom, use a cane or rod up the middle, the smaller pots rest on the bigger ones

Thanks for the ideas. The more I think about it, my idea isn't really going to work without creating some sort of platform for the pots to stand on as the weight of the pot full of compost would make it unstable. The topsy turvy idea would work though if I put them in off centre.

I've seen it done on an old step ladder somebody got off a freebies site. They had pots etc on the steps and a hanging basket on the back (the side without the treads) . It looked good.

I left out one crucial bit of the instructions
The hole in the pot is off centre so the pot above rests on the inner edge of the pot below..........does that make sense? Maybe best if you don't answer that
