  • happiness is ... 13 fat cobs

Yes, I'm really that happy just because I just picked 13 big fat cobs of corn (Lark, and a couple of Double Standard). And there's lots more to come.

What a superb year for sweetcorn! All the cobs are well-filled, unlike previous years when I've had half-empty cobs due to poor pollination.

    I put it down to:

    1) lots and lots of rain in July
    2) tapping the plants to release pollen

    Anyways. Delish.
    (and I got 3 mini-pumpkins too)

I lost the first few batches as well ... Lark didn't germinate, and lots of double standards just rotted in their loo rolls.

Had my first tonight. Much better than any I've ever had.

Even the Mrs, that hates cobs, liked it!

                  Oh well done !
I only planted 4 really late, have 2 fat cobs forming and 1 tiddler.
How will I know when they are ready?

I've given up on corn until we get a lottie as I just don't have the space and the last time I tried I got on average 3 kernals on each!
Our next door neighbour has grown them though and I was really sad for him yesterday as the wind pretty much flattened his whole crop

Yum - I love sweetcorn - I thought I might try it next year.
Is there a minimum amount of plants you should grow to try and ensure good pollination?
And how many can you fit in for each 4x4foot plot?

Started of with 20 plants but only put 7 in due to lack of space, very happy with what i have got seeing as it is my first time growing them

That must be a lovely sight all those lovely juicy cobs. I can see three on mine but whether they will actually make it into something edible remains to be seen.

At least I have improved from my previous attempt where for some reason I had it in my head that the cobs were produced on the tassels and it was only by chance I found two rather dried out cobs on the stalk a fair bit later.

Well done, we have got about 6 that are ready. Only my 7 year old likes them so I am interested in how you freeze them, I assume you take them out of the natural wrapper first? do you do anything else to them or simply bag them up and pop them in the freezer?
