  • Going on Holiday for a week...

Hi. I have three tomato plants (Garener's Delight, Moneymaker and Sun Baby) and two Aubergine plants. All in 10" pots in my conservatory. What are my options for watering them if we go away for a week in a few week's time?

I've seen those screw on spikes, but not sure if they'll end up overwatering the plants?

A garden centre have said that I could certainly put the tomatoe pots ina large tray and fill it with water as the toms have water roots at the bottom and they will only suck up what they need. This leads me to two questions:

    1. Is this correct?;
    2. If so, will they last a week without tomoato feed?
    3. What about the aubs?

    Many thanks, in anticipation!

Your tom plants will certainly last a week without feeding them. I personally only feed my tomatoes once a week any and it works for me. I am sure others might differ with me. Make sure not to put your tomato plants in the water trays until the last minute. Roots dont like to be waterlogged but if its only for a week they will survive.
I have a conservatory also and personally if it were me i would put the tomato plants outside until i came back from holiday. My conservatory gets so hot even on a dull day.
Sorry cant help with the other plants as i have never grown them.
Good luck and enjoy your holiday.
Let us know how it all went with the plants when you get back.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

Brilliant. Just seen that on the net. I think the cataloge number has change to 042/4624 (in case anyone else wants to look for it).

Cheers for that, it was really helpful!

If I don't get a chance to buy the trays (I think the water top thing might not be enough with a 2 litre bottle for a week), is it feasible to put the pots in teh bath tub filled with water? Or is that a 'no-no'?

(as to why I might not get round to it is a long story of being away from home for the week with my wallet still at home!!!)

          Thanks

I went away for a weekend, and did this:
lined a tray with a newspaper. Filled the tray with water, stood pots in that. I put a towel over the top of the greenhouse for shading.

Wish i could help, ive just come home after 9 nights away to find my growhouse blown to bits all over my garden and my sub artics all bent over, ive replanted them today in pots rather than in growbags, so im keeping my fingers crossed!
