Furtle, Furtle, Furtle - itchy fingered Newbie

    Furtle, Furtle, Furtle - itchy fingered Newbie

    I have the 19th June circled on my calender as the possible date my earlys (Duke of York) will be ready and this is my first year of growing spuds........last night I was just about to water the sack but the urge was too great and I couldn't resist a furtle, nothing too deep mind......then it became a semi desperate dig, slightly deeper...then I saw the creamy flesh of a spud. It was about the size of a golf ball (which may be a bit small) but the satisfaction was imense

    I do have a couple of related questions:-

    Are Duke of York a full size potato or a salad potato?
    Can you eat them small?

    If they need a bit longer I will have to resist furtling.

    Depends how big you like to eat them really

    Collect enough to satisfy your need and leave the rest a bit longer

      as shirlthegirl says depends how big you want them, last year i couldnt wait any longer and used them as salad potatoes which were yummy mind you we didnt have any bigger ones tho as we ate them all

        I have (only just) resisted furtle-ing too... have promised myself that I will leave them at least until the weekend.....

          It's a first early spud so they are generally not massive. To my mind the beauty of early potatoes is that they are sweet and tasty, not that they are massive. The maincrops are fine for that. Golf ball sounds not too bad!

            Although i can understand what it means to furtle potatoes. but what actually furtle means.. i cannot find this word in dictionary

              The word is a made up word, Falkon - meaning to feel around, rummage gently, or to probe with the fingers. In a furtive sort of a way.
              Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

                Thanks everyone. I will have a furtle at the weekend and make the current Mrs P a nice dinner on Sunday with my spuds. But only take what I need.

                      It's in my Dictionary! It means to delve or grope with the hands. I suspect that it's etymologically related to 'furtive'.

                          I looked up 'furtle' on google, it came up with a definition on the urban dictionary (well known for lewd phrases, this is what it said:

                          1. furtle
                          Move something around a little, to pick at something. Usually in reference to something trivial
                          A cork that is nearly out of a wine bottle:

                          just furtle around with it a bit, it'll come out.

                          A person picking a scab:

                          don't furtle, you'll make it bleed.

                              Yes, It came up in my search results too on google. but unfortunately because of site ads and hidden stuff, urban dict. is a blocked site at my work proxy servers.
