Do slugs eat fleece?

    Do slugs eat fleece?

    An idle thought! Having lost so many of my plants to slugs and snails do you think this would prevent them?
    Cover the ground with wide strips of fleece and plant through it. Then pull up the outer edges of the fleece so that the plants are enclosed. Peg or tie the top edges together.
    Would keep out butterflies and birds too - maybe not ideal if you need pollinators but by that time the plants should be robust enough to withstand the slugs (perhaps!).
    Maybe make a cardboard collar to fit around the stem to hold the fleece down?
    Any thoughts?

    Don't know VC, but snails eat toilet rolls. Seriously, I have an outside loo (as well as an inside one) and I've found snails in there and the loo roll has been nibbled.

          Know what you mean Flo! Lots of fleecy bundles - a bit like a cotton plantation.
          I'm going to catch some slugs and snails and wrap them in fleece (not each snug individually like toffees ) and see if they can chew their way to freedom!
          I'm not going hunting in this weather though.....

              the size of some of the little expletives I have found - I would be very surprised if they where not on the local housing list looking for flats to rent soon.

                  Found one on my kitchen floor and wrapped it in clingfilm and put it in the bin.

                    There are special categories in the Olympics - now known as the Snugpics.
                    In preparation all snugs have been taking drugs to build up their weight and strength - blue pills are banned as they are on the dangerous drugs list.
                    Each evening at dusk, you can watch the snugs doing their warmup exercises, stretching and compressing every inch of their bodies, then a light meal of a non fattening sort, like salad. Onto the starting blocks, or diving board for the swimmers, on your (slimy) marks, get set and they're off, racing around the plot, snatching high energy food along the route until they arrive at the choicest veg.
                    Then a slow jog back to their beds before daylight, avoiding all the traps along the route!
                    We must be grateful that the Snugpics take place every 4 years and not annually -although the rules on that may be changing too..

                        I wonder how snugs feel about Polly Styrene? I've seen some tiles going spare.

                            That brought back memories of my dad putting the newspaper under his arm and announcing "I'm off down the yard"

                            I didn't like it because there was no lock on the door and my legs weren't long enough to put my foot up against it.

                            You could sing to your heart's content in there though.

                              It took me years to stop putting a coat on to go to the toilet - it was at the end of the backyard and perishing cold

                                I use a mix of six scoops of compost three scoops of sand/grit and two scoops of perlite,the quantity is unimportant as long as the ratio is the same, if for seeds I use this mix, if I am potting on I add some blood, fish and bone, along with a small quantity of chicken manure pellets
