  • do peppers self pollinate

hi all first guestion why does sitting in your greenhouse make you so happy and relaxed. really i want to ask if i,m growing redskin peppers in my greenhouse do i have to hand pollinate.i didnt know anything about this till i spotted an article on web saying peppers dont self pollinate.is this true.
never be afraid to ask because a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

Because I am nicely tucked away from the phone, wife and kids with maybe Radio 4 tickling away in the background. My potting shed is my temple!

Do you have more than one plant?

I really couldn't say for sure as a scientist, but I had only one chille plant last year and that had plenty of chillies without any paintbrushwork from me. I have saved seed in the past and it has come true to type so from experiannce...No they don't need a pollination partner.

i had loads of ordinary sweet peppers in the greenhouse last year - loads of flowers on each plant, but only one or two peppers per plant - friends who took some of my surplus pepper plants and grew them outside said they had loads of peppers per plant - i mentioned it on here and was told they need pollinating either by insects (put them outside) or by hand (cotton bud)

Very much the same as tomatoes. When walking round the greenhouse late morning tap the plants, the flowers then release the pollen and Bob's your uncle. They also seem to do well enough without the tapping, but at least it makes me feel useful.

chillies and pepers ARE self polinating and dont need and help but some people still beleve the myth thet then to be hand polinated but they dont as they have both male and female parts in the flower
