    Composting rhubabrb leaves

    Hi again - thanks for the helpful replies about my Rhubabrb Chard.

    Rhubarb seems to be cropping up in different forms - I picked loads from the allotment today but was suddenly reminded that someone told me you shouldn't put rhubarb leaves into the compost bin..is that correct? They said it had something to do with the leaves being poisonous (II know they are poisonous if you eat them but figured they would rot down like everything else). Anybody know the truth?

    Just don't eat the compost and you'll be fine.

      Like Alldigging says they're perfectly fine to compost, I've put some in today.
      Location....East Midlands.

        some people prefer to use rhubarb leaves to make some sort of bug killer rather than compost the leaves ....

          As it happens, I read the answer to your question recently in one of my books about composting. Apparently, there is a popular idea that you shouldn't compost rhubarb leaves, because they're poisonous, but it's a myth: the poison won't carry through to whatever plants you feed with the compost.

                Thanks for all the replies - seems I am ok to carry on putting leaves in my compost rather than send them off in the green wheelie bin
