Can i store potatoes in compost?

    Can i store potatoes in compost?

    This may be a silly question but bare with me

    After the problems with scab which i posted on another thread i want to uplift all my potatoes(which are in bags).

    I don't have any hessian bags and after trawling through dobies,b+q,focus and homebase yesterday i could'nt find any there either.
    I know that some people say you can just take what you need from a bag by "furtling" but what i would like to know is can i empty all my tatties out to make sure they are OK and then store them in dry compost within my dark garage?
    Obviously they will be excluded from light,rain and if they last long enough from frosts and i know carrots,beetroot etc can be stored in a similar way(sand or left within the ground).

    Is there any reason this will not work?I know hessian bags are available online but would prefer to try this method if it is viable.

    Any thoughts?

    I have heard of potatoes being stored like this, but in a sealed container. I think you can use sand too.
    Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

      Yes, you can store in dry compost; I'm doing it with some of mine.

      It is basically what a farmer would call a clamp.
      The proof of the growing is in the eating.
      Leave Rotten Fruit.
      Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potasium - potash.
      Autant de têtes, autant d'avis!!!!!

        Yes it is a very practical way of storing potatoes. I inadvertently did it with some potatoes in my compost heap last year. The potatoes grew in the heap and I didn't dig them up until I cleared the heap out in Feb and there were all these potatoes ( some of them huge), all in good condition and nice and clean. They lasted several weeks once dug out.

          I am going to give it a go and hope i dont provide a nice haven for any hiding slugs.

            If you keep it dryish slugs shouldn't be interested
