  • Broad Beans And Frost?

2 weeks ago I sowed some 'Aquadulce Claudia' broad beans as per the article in last months Grow Your Own magazine.

They are sitting in my unheated greenhouse but when I went in there yesterday the compost was frozen and there's still no sign of shoots . Shall I just write these beans off and start again?

    Cheers in advance.

No leave them a bit longer, have you covered them with anything, maybe a lid on top would help to keep them more protected, mine are in the ground and still no sign.

      Thanks for the quick reply!

I've just wrapped the pots in bubble wrap and I've put a layer over the top too in the hope that it will warm the compost a bit.

Leave them for a bit, but could you not bring them somewhere a bit warmer till they germinate?

I might just bring them in until they germinate... Was hoping not to as the good lady doesn't like it when I clutter up the windowsill with too many plants!

bigt1888 - I take it yours are sown directly into the ground? Just asking as we are in a similar area...

Mine are just breaking through the surface of the soil in my lottie and will have to take their chances with the weather.

The covering of snow should protect them!

I'd bring 'em inside and stick them on a windowsill (if you can find one that's empty!). I find that broad beans typically take a long time to germinate anyway.

Im not brave enough to sow them till February this year, the snow destroyed them last year so Im waiting for nicer weather (fingers crossed)

Yes they will, tough as old boots mostly

4" is the perfect height for them to see out the winter - not so high that the wind can knock them down

Mine are about 3 inches high having been planted out around a month ago. They look rather yellow/etiolated and appear frost damaged following last nights -6.8C temperatures as shown on my max/min thermometer.

Interestingly my late sown carrots seem to be quite happy under a tunnel cloche despite the bitter cold, which shows what a difference a small bit of protection makes! They are just getting to a nice baby carrot size which will be ideal for dinner!

Mine are under a single layer of fleece and seem to be okay. I feel reasonably confident as the autumn sown ones last year survived outside during the snow etc without any protection. Some of the leaves did die off but they produced new shoots once it warmed up.

I got some broad beans last week, but now the ground is frozen, so I cant put them in.
Would I be ok to sow them in pots and put them in my growhouse over the winter and plant them out in spring, or is it too cold for that now too. Should I just wait until spring now.
