  • Bolting Beets!

The burpee golden beetroot I was so looking forward to are starting to bolt and it's hard to tell but I think the boltardy might be going that way too. None of those beets are larger than large marbles.

Is my only option really to pull them up and start again - are they no good now even for there leaves?

[EDIT] ... oh dear, think I see a flower stalk on my first sowing of carrots too - what are my options for this..

I wasnt going to let the weather get me down but now I am really fed up

Out of curiousity how do bolting Beets look? Leaves should still be eatable.

Still time to resow carrots and beetroot, so get another row in, then in a week or two, another, and then again - I will be doing until the end of July

In the case of beets, instead of new leaves emerging from the base of the plant, a stem emerges with leaves growing off of it - eventually the tip of the stem will beocme a flower or seed head.

          Wow - really?

My last year's beets and parsnips are flowering but none of this year's beets [and many were sown a fair while ago] are bolting. Get another sowing in pronto!

If you want to see beetroot flowering - I can take a photo of my Dobbie's Purples in full action tomorrow. Just for the record.

Yes both types of beets appear to be bolting, I have a later sowing which has germinated and will sow some more.

The carrots are fine - no flower stalk, false alarm.

On the bright side most of my parnips have germinated and I know they can be difficult.... so it's not all bad.
