  • Beans and marigolds

Hi, I have it in my head that beans and marigolds are good companion plants. I've done a quick search but can't seem to find anything to back this up.
Do any of you companion plant anything with your runner and French beans? I know nasturtiums go together well with broadies in order to attract black fly but is this true of other types of bean too?

Marigolds attract hover flies and their larvae eat aphids so they are good to have anyway.

Calendula (English/Pot Marigold) attracts hoverflies as DK says, and they also attract blackfly. So you could use them as a sacrificial crop to avoid getting blackfly (aka black bean aphid) on your beans (any beans).

When the calendula gets infested, pull up and compost the whole thing (mind you, you might be composting hoverfly eggs/larvae as well)

.....and it's French marigolds (tagetes) that you plant with tomatoes to repel green and blackfly
          Marigolds can be so confusing!!

Well I haven't a clue which does what but I got LOADS of calundula & marigold seedlings to put out they will all be randomly placed in the veg patch & salad boxes/pots in the normal "bung 'em in & see what happens" approach,I guess the worst that can happen is I get lots of pretty flowers

I picked up a cheap tray of marigolds from the supermarket and just shoved them in the veg beds coz they looked like they were dying! I now have lovely flowers in with my brassicas and stubby, chewed plants in my tender veg bed (but the slugs have left the courgettes, pumpkins and beans more or less alone whilst they ate the flowers!).
Will have to move alot of the nasturiums though, I didnt realiese they got so big!!

Final spacing should be about 9" apart in any direction

I dot them all over the place and usually have one in each tomato bucket too. I have poached egg plants in with the beans.
