  • Autumn Onion Sets

I received my Electric autumn red onion sets on Tuesday and yesterday I planted some of them out in the garden.

Whilst browsing yesterday when the forum was down, I came across a number of post that suggested that they should be planted in September.

I know it is the very end of August but have I planted them too early?

It would make a change as everything else I planted late!

I don't think it'll make too much difference - next week is September, after all!

planted my red onions today used a dibber and filled that hole up with multi purpose compost then pushed the onions into that hole so they are just under the soil. Has anyone else done this or have you all just popped them in no fuss. Should i cover them over the winter months as up north it gets rather chilly.

Sounds OK Redic87, but how far north are you? Onions are pretty hardy but if you are far up north I guess a fleece covering would be OK. Would stop the birds pulling them up.

Don't cover them and don't plant them early, the idea is for them to get their roots down over the winter without making too much top growth then they'll be in a position to race away in spring. If they grow too much in the autumn you'll find that they bolt next year. I plant mine in mid/late October.

I know I'm a bit further south but from memory I planted mine a lot later last year, probably around October time, may even have been the very end of October.
I had the best ever crop of onions this year. Probably just lucky once, but I shall do the same thing again this year as I know it worked.

Haven't got mine yet but it is still a little early to put them in. I usually wait till October, as Bluemoon said you don't want to much top growth before winter sets in. Iv'e got 300 on order from Marshalls which is more than I would normally plant but it was a bulk buy and seemed a good price.

If you plant them a few each week will they all develop at an even pace or do they all arrive together regardless of when you plant them?
I ask because I am planting onions for the first time this autumn.
