  • Anyone elses cucumbers getting a 2nd wind?

My cukes seem to be getting a second wind, with loads of flowers.

This is my first year, had 2 or 3 from the marketmore, one from the ridgemount, and 2 cocktail sausage sized mini's.

After a weekend away, looks like I have 6 MM's, 3 RMs and 4 large mini's coming along! Plus loads of flowers starting to open.

    Pretty chuffed.

Yes, mine are too, finally! My cuc's have been pathetic this year, but after talking to someone at our village show, who also shows all over the country, I was happy to find I'm not alone. Apparantly a lot of the 'Pro Growers' are struggling to meet the requirements for cucumbers this year and the classes have been low in entries.

Must be something to do with the weather... No surprise there!

        Cucumber Glut!

We have five cucumber plants in our polytunnel and have been inundated this year, picking four or five a day and trying to use them up, give them away and our chickens have also enjoyed them! Not everyone realises that you must grown the cucumbers on the shoots, not the main stem, just let the main stem grow to about 6ft and then take leaders from the main plant with string which will give you many many more cucumbers....we should know! We usually do about four or five to each plant. You can usually leave three or four on the main stem to get a few early cucumbers. Needless to say we have been trying to find loads of recipes for cucumbers and one of our favourites is a cucumber dip as well as a soup with tomatoes and cucumbers!

Yet again, my cukes have been a phenomenal success - three varieties grown - Femspot, Pepinex 69 and Passandra (the last being a midi cuke) - have been cropping steadily throughout the season and are also now producing new flowers after a slight setback due to RSM.

First time growing cuces for me - marketmore from free seeds with magazine. Just two plants outside and we're getting one every day or so and ther's plenty more to come if the weather stays warm.

grew mine outside in bottomless flower buckets filled with MPC over a manure pit roughly 1 ft cube.
neither show any signs of slowing down yet although I have had to remove some of the oldest leaves

My cukes have been rubbish all year. Out of about half a dozen plants I've had less than half a dozen cukes.... BUT the Mirelle are finally picking up, I had two yesterday and there are quite a lot more now forming on the plants. Woohoo!

Ours took a bit longer than normal to get going this year, but we're getting a fair few now.

I grew burpless this year. It's my first time growing cucumbers in the UK, so wasn't really expecting much. Also, just moved house in June so they were planted as seeds in mid June once I had dug up the lawn for plot. They've been pretty neglected, with three week long holidays this summer at various times.. so not much watering. Amazingly they've done fantastic.. I've got five or six great tasting cucumbers from the two plants.. and many more are on the way.
