  • Water Containers as Cloches

Please does anyone know where I may get some emptly water containers. The type that they use in offices etc., for those water machines. I would like a few for my lettuce. Is there a special dumping place for them at the bottle bank.

I always look longingly at them at work but they are unfortunately collected and refilled by the water company.

Hi GB I've often wondered this, but never come up with an answer! They would be ideal wouldnt they?

I also had the same idea as you, to use those bottles as cloches. Hubby tells me there is a deposit companies have to pay, and they have to collect the empties before new ones are installed. I'M SURE they won't miss a couple.

Not sure that I've seen them in the UK but over here we can buy 5 and 8 litre bottles of water for domestic use - I have a large collection of them at the back of the shed, all with bottoms removed and holes drilled on the tops for air circulation.

I think tho that you can only buy - like supermarket buying - max of 2 litre bottles in UK.

I am sure you can buy larger bottles than 2 litres here in GB I can't remember where I will get back to the vine when I do.

You could have a search thru Google for water cooler companies, and email a few to see if you can source some empty bottles for free (most companies seem to send them to landfill, what a waste. Nowt wrong with tap water methinks)

I am pretty certain that Buxton mineral water comes in 5 litre bottles.

As Pw says they are taken back to the company.Wether nor not they are refilled or not I'd say if you go asking you will probably be asked for a donation .We have them at work and they are always taken away ,Three empty ones = three full ones.

Spent a couple of hours this morning phoning numerous companies with NO LUCK . Won't even let me buy a full one. Seems they are like gold dust. I cannot even find those ones spotted on EBay

I use the 5 litre cordial bottles obtainable at all good supermarkets - you have to empty them first.
