Default Free plastic plant labels!

Had one of the plotholder approach me the other day asking if we used plastic plant labels, as he'd found something brilliant to use for it!

His wife was throwing away an old venetian blind, and he hit on the idea of removing the plastic slats and cutting them into plant labels, sooo simple, but what a good way to recycle! The slats are about 4' in length and he's been cutting them into 6" lengths, so gets 8 per length, but as the blind had 100 slats in it, he's got 800 labels for nothing, so he gave us a few slats to cut up for ourselves!

I may even try the local window blind shops to see if they ever throw out damaged ones and see whether we can get some for free!

Hope this is of help to some out there!

Great idea Mrs D - good luck at your local window blind shop. I cut up plastic milk cartons to use as labels, thanks to someone on here - Two Sheds, I think.

I ran out of my plastic labels made from milk bottles so I just wrote the name of the plant in felt tip on the side of the pot. Don't know why I never thought of it before!

Great idea Mrs Dobby, thanks for sharing it. However, I now have loads of little white labels from Wilkinsons. I only use pencil to write on them and it comes off easily with a bit of washing up liquid and elbow grease leaving the label ready for re-use.

I recycle my Wilkinson's white ones too Shirley. Some of them have been used so much you can nearly see through them!

Cool idea Mrs D, thanks for sharing as ever.

I recently had need of some labels (I'd started sowing before checking I had any labels - d'oh). Anyhoo - we don't drink much milk, so I had no white plastic available to cut up. I did however have plenty of clear plastic water and squash bottles. I now have a number of clear plastic labels that I used a garden marker on.

I use milk cartons to make small ones but for super duper large ones to mark the rows of crops on the lotty I cut free (if your lucky) black buckets from top to bottom and use correction pen to write the name on! you can use the bottom bit for a pot tray as well

Going back to the venetian blinds, my nearest neighbour had loads and has cut them into 3" strips and handed them out to everyone to be put on string as pigeon scarerers. Perhaps this will work but I think I'll stick with netting. It was very generous, I'll have to find a use for them, they are metal and not easily marked!
