  • Have I got blackcurrants?

I think I've found a blackcurrant bush on my front border!

My mum used to have a couple, so I know what the leaves look like. I vaguely remember seeing some fruit on it in the summer/autumn, but we'd just moved in and I can't think that far back.

This looks like it's not been cut back in a while (possibly not planted, but sown by birds maybe?)

The one thing that I'm not sure about, is it seems to have small pink flowers coming through.

Do blackcurrants get pink flowers on?
Is it too late to cut it back - and indeed, will it need it?

    Thanks!

It's not flowering currant (Ribes sanguineum)? The leaves are very similar but flowering currant produces no useful fruit. Flowers definitely pink and now is about the right time for them to be flowering if it is flowering currant. Also would explain why it's in the border... nice plant, but sadly not much use for pies and such!

Sounds like a flowering currant. They can have cat-pee smelling leaves - don't try a tea with them!

Took a couple of pics this morning of the flowers...

Mr OWG says that there were fruits on them late summer/early autumn. I suspect that they're not edible though... shame!

Definitely Flowering currant. I've not tried eating the fruit. I suspect they're not actually toxic!

Did a quick google, apparently the fruits are edible but really not worth it.

Do you know someone with a blackcurrent bush ? They are very easy to grow from cuttings...
Chop off a few long twigs
                    Stick in ground
Go for a brew...( well a bit longer!!!! )
I can kill most things , but had no probs with that- must be easy!!!!
