Oh, these are too cute. I would love to have a go at growing them. By the way, I know it's the wrong thread, but the banana shallots have germinated now - if they don't grow as clumps what's the best final spacing for them in the garden (I plant most of my stuff in blocks)
thanks

I hope so Jenny as I have eaten about a dozen so far and have made the last one into soup this morning along with a small crown prince.

What is meant by "open pollinated"?

Open pollinated varieties are ones that grow true to type from saved seed. If you grow several squash together you may get some cross over of characteristics but if you grow one on its own, generally the seed will come true. You can reselect the best fruit to collect seeds from and continuously doing this eventually gives you a strain that does well in your locality with the characteristics that you want.

Squash are terribly promiscuous though, so if you want to be sure of getting 'true' seed, you're better off hand pollinating. http://www.realseeds.co.uk/seedsavinginfo.html Although you might discover an amazing new variety if you just let the bees do it for you.

Thanks Piglet, my seeds arrived this morning. What pretty packets you all seem to put your seeds in. I almost don't want to open them!
Alice has now sent me the link for making my own!

Default Thanks, indeed !

Seeds safely received and seed packet duly noted!

Many, many thanks for the offer and splendid service. This is the first transaction I have made via the site but hopefully I shall be back, including some offers in due course. However, first I have the chore of reviewing my seed box and sorting out the wheat from the chaff - almost literally! I have an unopened packet of Forget-me-not seeds, marked at 6p for the purchase price! Those definitely won't be thrown out nor sown!!

Best wishes.

Hi Pigletwillie. Are these squash used like butternut? If so, do you have any seeds left? Just one or two would be fine - they do look lovely in the picture you posted.
