  • Would you use this egg??

When I let my girls out this morning, I found an egg on the roosting bars. When I got home I noticed that it had been pecked open slightly at one end (one of my girls, not sure which, is a wretched egg eater on and off). Would you use it? Obviously it has had a beak in it, plus it was on the bars, where there are droppings. I've broken it into a cup, but just thought I'd pick the brains of you good people! What about cooking it in a cake, for instance? Thank you!

If the membrane inside the shell was not broken then I would use the egg quite happily. If the membrane was broken the dog would get lucky

Doesn't sound too appealing to me! Cooked chicken poo is still chicken poo! LOL!

I'd go with the intact membrane decision!
If it is punctured, why not scramble it and mix it in with some chook mash???

I'd cook it and give it back to the chooks too. Best not risk a dicky tummy

Oo, ta for all the advice! I will do as suggested, and give it back to the chickens - I do worry that this will encourage the little madam who attacked it, but if I cook it hopeful it won't make her all nostalgic for a taste of raw egg again! The membrane was broken, so open to bugs etc. I probably wouldn't have given disposing of it a second thought a few weeks ago when they were popping out 3 a day, but they've eased off now and every egg counts

Can't give it to the dog Shirl, as I haven't got one these days, although it was always a favourite treat!

If we find one with a little hole I hardboil it straight away and OH has it for his lunch in a sarnie. Not killed him yet I think they are fine as free range eggs have a really tough membrane and they are often quite hard to get into anyway!

The extra protein will do the girls good at this time of the year. When it's cooked I don't think they recognise it - especially mixed in with other goodies.

If I have a cracked one I crack it into a cup to see if it's clean if I have any doubt then it goes to the pup. We have one layer at the moment laying monstrosities, we call them veloceraptor eggs but they taste good however we don't put those out to sell as the customers are likely not to come back As far as hard boiling goes fresh eggs are a nightmare to 'peel' I always end up with bits of white all over the place

I gave my mum some eggs to hardboil for a party last summer. She turned up over an hour late all flustered. She had had herself , dad, my nan all peeling for britain as they were such b*ggers to peel. Made her late for the party lol.

She hasn't offered to do them again lol!

How old do they need to be to peel as 'usual'????

I tried for a party once as well, ended up mashing them up with the mayo was such a mess To be honest Nicos I don't really know, I keep promising myself I'll save some back for a couple of weeks to see if it's easier, but they always end up getting used........

OK, I am gonna give it a try, first attempt will be at a week old and let you know the outcome.....
