  • Notes on Covutto incubators and small chicks

    All

please be careful when using the covutto incubators such as these Covatutto 16 Incubator - Novital Chicken Duck Quail Pheasent Incubators

we have used one several times this season already as a hatcher (due to it being manual turn) and as such it has performed very well. however, we have had problems with quail chicks and some bantam chicks getting their feet stuck in the perforations, leading to strained and dislocated legs.

If incubating bantams or quail (which the high sides on the covutto 16 are excellant for) put a ***** cloth or chick matting down first to limit the chicks access to the perforated grid to avoid such a tragedy.

if you do find a chick with its foot stcuk, be very careful to remove it - dont just tug it - and observe the chicks behaviour. if it cant walk on the leg as it has been strained or dislocated (note that a chickens eg can actually be dislocated technically but more the joints stretch too far) then consider strapping the legs into place for a few days whilst the chicks are "maleable" otherwise the leg will never set and you will eventually loose it.

apart from this one problem - one we dont have when hatching large fowl i hasten to add) the covutto are a very reliable incubator, and worth a look into if looking for a cheap start into hatching your own.

I'm so pleased with that last sentence...we saw these and were quite taken by them......not that we're ever hatching again

    Cheers for sharing the info

Thanks for that BP. I have a Covatutto 16. I also have borrowed an older bigger posher Covatutto as a hatcher which has the same floor. As I've only hatched bantams so far I haven't had a problem but will go and put a j cloth in now. Have to say I much prefer the 16 to the forced air one - found a cold egg in the corner of the bigger one and put the thermometer in the corner - it was 5*C cooler than the centre
