  • My Chick Pics......!

So, not to be left out, I thought you'd like to see our new arrivals

They're newly hatched Barn Owls....well, one is hatched! And really they belong to the falconry that DD works at. Sugar is the hatchling, Spice is still in the egg. At this very moment DD is trying to help Spice hatch - the chick is too tired to break any more shell and the shell is particularly tough on this egg.

Sorry about picture quality, I had to be quick as poss photographing Spice as the heat was escaping from the incy.

          Baby Barnies Update!!

We've had a very eggciting evening! I feel daftly emotional, and quite priviledged to witness the tiny Barnies hatching.

Spice hatched fully about 5 mins ago We've no idea what sex they are, and DD won't know until they are fully grown. Here's Spice, just out of the egg (with a little eggstra careful help) and Sugar & Spice together - you can probably see which is which as Sugar is a tiny bit bigger.

Sweet. Not pretty (baby raptors run baby parrots a close second for ugliness) but SO appealing!
Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.

This is as cute as they get...until they're feathered they are really quite ugly. And, my gosh, do they make some ugly noises...they hiss like a box of snakes. I was quite shocked the first time I heard Barnies hissing - thought it was our mogs having a disagreement.

The older Barnies, Inca & Boogie, look like proper Barn owls - just smaller than adults. They stay at the Falconry at night now.

Oh Jules how lovely! We have barn owls nesting in one of our barns, but it's too high up to get a look in (and I wouldn't want to disturb anyway) As you say, the hissing is incredible, isn't it.

I often see one of the adults come out when I go up to let the chooks out early in the morning, and I stand in the field (in my nightdress) with chooks round my feet, watching the owl. Just a fantastic experience.

They are so the ugliest little things I have ever seen, but I'll bet they'll be gorgeous when they feather

aw bless them! They are ugly, aren't they? Wait until they get to the fluffy stage though Do you have to keep an eye on them during the night or are they fairly self-sufficient?

Just now they need fresh minced steak every 2 hours or so, but DD is the falconer so it's her job! I've got squeamish in my old age so can't go into the kitchen when she starts to mince up fluffy yellow chicks in my old blender when they are a few weeks old.

Inca & Boogie, the first two Barnie chicks DD raised are 9 weeks now and stay at the falconry all the time. I miss having them in the garden...doesn't half stop passers by in their tracks!

Oh no - I couldn't cope with mincing chicks up! I know everything needs to live but I'd be in tears, I think. I guess that's nature red in tooth and claw, though.
