| Watered the plot last night and whilst there noticed that the broad beans have plenty of pods on them. One of the pods in particular looked quite big next to the others - so I picked it. Got home and tried to "shell" the beans. Looks like I need to wait a while yet - the beans were smaller than peas. Speaking of peas, I've also got several pods on my Heritage peas. They're purple at the moment, and I think I'll have to wait for them to swell too before picking. Anyone know if they turn green before they're ready to pick? Tantalisingly close - things are getting exciting.

| You don't need to shell broad beans unless they are quite large - they are so tender when they're that size you can even have them raw in salads! Don't make extra work for yourself!

| No, I meant taking them out of the pods shelling.

| The purple peas will swell up like ordinary peas - they are ready when the pod feels full. The pod will still be purple but the peas are ... green! Good, innit?

| So let me be the first to ask - just how big was it?

| Tiny! About 4-5 inches long, and quite thin.
