  • Transparent Containers ?

The containers I've bought from The Range are transparent...will this be a problem growing veg? The potatoes I'll be growing in flower tubs.

Also how deep does the compost need to be for carrots?

    Thanks

As far as i know (Which isn't much lol) i don't think you should grow root vegetables in transparent tubs unless you're going to cover them as apprently the light will turn them green (i know this is the case for potatoes and carrots anyway)

Anyway i'm sure there are the more experiance growers on here that can enlighten you more then i can

Only a possible problem with root veg. Just line them with a bit of dark plastic or card. I used an empty compost bag

that was my question too. Mchanen gives the same advice I was given.

Should be fine for non-root veg I'd have thought

Yeah they will turn green, I also don't think it will do other plants good having the light shining on their roots tbh

I've done it - during my first year of growing and the veg were fine. If you place the containers side by side like long raised beds, not all of the sides get the light anyway.

Just put root veg towards the middle of the boxes.

As deep as your carrots and then a bit extra?

I don't think it gives the sizes of carrots on the seed pack

Mine are in storage boxes about 10-12" deep. I figure that will be enough to accommodate an average size carrot.

Yea i'd say 10-12" should be fine- my trough isn't quite that deep but i just want to grow baby carrots rather then full size ones
