  • Puzzled about potato harvesting

I have some bags of first and second earlies and some maincrop Desiree in the ground. I am puzzled that the Desiree are now beginning to flower but the earlies have shown no signs of flowering yet. It looks as if the maincrop maybe ready for harvesting before the earlies at this rate! Can you gurus advise please.

Many earlies don't flower. You need to go by the time to maturity from planting to harvesting, rather than by flowering.

Yup, lots of earlies dont flower. If you can remember what date they were planted, if you think they should be ready, dig one up and have a look, or have a furtle about with your fingers and see.

My earlies were ready even before the foliage died down, let alone flowers

All my foliage has just started to die down and the spuds are ready - I never had any flowers on them at all.
