japanese onion trouble

hi i hope somebody can give me some advice. I have just took out my japanese onions which have been growing really well. When i have looked some of them have a white powder on the base of them near the roots. Does anybody know what this is and can i still eat them if i wash it off ? Apart from the white powder they seem perfectly fine. hope somebody can give me advice thanks
