  • Final Pots for Tomatoes

I'm just about to pop my Million toms into their final pots (good old Asda flower buckets! ) and was wondering about drainage.

I've drilled about 14 x 10mm holes in the bottom of each bucket and I remember my Nan telling me that you should always put some gravel or small stones in the bottom of the pots to help with drainage.

My newbie question is if I put a layer of pea shingle, approx. 15mm - 20mm deep, in the bottom of the buckets will I still be able to water them from below? Will the osmosis still work?

    My ignorance astounds me!

I dont bother with crocks or gravel for plants like these, i.e. toms, peppers Aubergines etc, but I dont water from the bottom either, are yours going into trays then!

Yep, I'll be putting them in trays to water them from below.

I've got 5 so I might do two with gravel and three without and see what difference it makes.
