  • Determinate or indeterminate

my gardeners delight tom is pushing out a LOT of side shoots making me think it could be a bush. However, the packet says it is indeterminate which is cordon. Or have I got that the wrong way round? Which ever way, s it a cordon or a bush? Thanks

    Tomato : Gardener's Delight (Seeds)

    T&M say Cordon.

When you say alot - do you mean one at each armpit - or more than one at each armpit? Or do they grow back after you have nipped them out?

It's a cordon BUT some people I know leave it to grow as a bush and they seem to do fine with that!

They grow ok as a bush but get really rampant. You are better off pinching out. Many varieties throw a lot of side shoots. It just gives you green fingers!

          Determinate or indeterminate.

Thanks peeps. I know which way I am heading now. As I* have 2, I'll do one as cordon and one as bush and see which is the better.

Pinching out is a daily chore - Gardeners Delight will continue to throw new sideshoots throughout its life.

I grow them as cordons in the greenhouse but tend to leave a lot of shoots on the outdoor ones.

One thing to watch for is long, weak secondary stems; they will break off easily and damage the plant (especially if they produce fruit) and are best removed.

I'm so confused! Mine seem to have forked.. one stem then it splits into two and has side shoots then at the top of each two they have tiny flower buds... I asked this same question in the other thread because I didn't know which would be the right one to ask it in but... if I just leave untill they have flowers and then nip out all other shoots and a few leaves, will they be ok? Thanks, Hx

Is 'armpit' a gardeners technical term then?

                    Determinate or indeterminate.

Armpits. Yes, there is just one shoot per armpit. In the meantime, my "beefstake" has two arms (like the olive trees in Corfu). I shall just watch and wait.

I need to tell you folks that furtle is now in our household vocabulary now followed by armpit. I look after some tomatoes for other folk - Roma (which I have had advice about on another post thank u) which are growing armpits on their armpits in a greenhouse!
