  • Anyone use Jiffy Plugs?

What are the advantages of using Jiffy Plugs? How long does you plant stay in one of these plugs before having to pot them?

I've used them. Trick is to soak them and allow them to drain for about an hour before sowing seed or putting cutting in.

How long they stay depends on the vigour of the plant. When you see the roots growing through the netting is time to plant them up or out IMO.

I do. I have onions in them that I have sown a pinch to each module and they will be planted out for spring onions.

Eco-chic is right - as soon as you see the roots coming through is a good time - I take the netting off when they get planted out.

I do too! I find them really useful. I have just sown my chillies, peppers and tomatoes and cucumbers directly into them. They are great for F1 seeds which you dont get many of and cost lots, as you can sow one per jiffy 7 and they are so clean and tidy sitting in propagators on my windowsills - I am not very good with compost! Saves me the job of pricking out etc. Didn't think of using them for my spring onions - will do next time!

        Great for cuttings too!

          Anyone use Jiffy Plugs

I have used them for all sorts of things over the years. As my toms have germinated yesterday, i shall put them in jiffy pots when they are large enough to handle, before going onto their place.

I've used them this year as I had some sent to me for free when I got something else. To be honest I won't be using them again, they're OK but that's it, nothing really to write home about and I personally prefer using newspaper pots (for free) or plastic module trays depending on what I am growing.

I've used them and they were ok, as is said above - plant out as soon as you see roots.

I like to take a sharp knife and slit down one side, I'm sure it isn't needed but it makes me feel good freeing the roots

                Peat Pockets

                Hi,

Have stumbbled across a product called Peat Pockets for the first time. Small netted disks of peat which when you add water they swell & then you sow your seeds into eack individual pocket. The apparent selling point is no mess & unrestricted root growth of your seedlings.
                But are they any good????

They're fine if you ignore the bit about no mess

I don't understand how compost + water can ever = no mess.

There definitely was no mess with the ones I've got, I just didn't find them particularly worth while.
